Poached Eggs with Rolled Smoked Salmon & Arugula

Sometimes when we have the time and the mood, we will cook something a little 'fancy'. And this is one of them. It's a fun way to eat your proteins and vegetables.

We love it with cracked black pepper (and a tinge of salt on the eggs)

And here's the recipe for all to try out. Have fun :)

Ingredients:
1.    Fresh eggs (this is very important)
2.    White vinegar
3.    Smoked Salmon
4.    Arugula
5.    Black Pepper
6.    Salt (optional)

Instructions for Poached Eggs:
1.    Bring water to boil in a pot and lower the heat so that the water is no longer boiling. Add 1-2 teaspoon of white vinegar. The vinegar helps to congeal the egg white more easily.
2.    Crack an egg and place the egg in a small bowl. Using a spoon or ladle, stir the boiled water in a circular motion. Remove spoon or ladle and gently slide the egg into the center of the pot. Do this one egg at a time. Depending on the size of your pot, you may cook 2 eggs at a time.
3.    Turn off the heat and cover the pot. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the egg whites are cooked. For a slightly more solid yolk texture, keep the heat low instead of turning it off.
4.    Lift the eggs out of the pot with a clean ladle and place it on your serving plate. Sprinkle some cracked black pepper (and optionally, a tinge of salt) to taste.

Instructions for Rolled Smoked Salmon with Arugula:
1.    Separate the salmon into very thin slices (smoked salmon should separate naturally into slivers) on a serving plate.
2.    Place the arugula on the salmon slices and roll the salmon over the arugula. The amount of arugula to be rolled is subject to personal preference.
3.    It’s now ready to be served! Enjoy.

We love that it's a little done and not too runny but if you like you can always turn off the flame and take out the egg on the 5 minute dot.

Tutorial : Using a Blender Pen

Sometimes we remember an awesome product we once used .... and my blender pen is one of such thing!

I was stamping some cute images from Lawn Fawn the other night and was contemplating on what to use to color them. I wanted it to have a watercolor-ish effect but I don't have any distress markers.

But I do have a blender pen and color pencils :)

So, here's a step-by-step on how I use the blender pen to create an effect similar to what distress markers could.

1. Stamp your chosen images. Here I chose Lawn Fawn's Into the Woods cute little animals.

2. Color your images with color pencils.

It's not necessary to make sure they are very evenly applied. Add in darker shades wherever you need them.

3. Here's where the magic starts.

4. Using the blender pen, 'color' the lighter colored areas first.

5. Clean the tip of the blender pen and then blend the darker colored areas into the lighter ones. If the color is too dark, clean the tip of the pen again by lightly dabbing it on a piece of tissue.

6. Voila! The image is perfectly & evenly colored with shadings and depth :)

Hope you enjoyed this little tutorial. Quick, easy and fun!

Next up, I will be sharing a tutorial using masking gum and watercolor. You will want to keep your eyes out for that!

Writing Backwards

I promised to post a video of how I write backwards... here it is.

Am still trying to figure out how to write 'normally' and achieve the results I want using my left hand. Maybe I have to adjust the slant more? Advice?

Practicing Calligraphy

I have another affection besides my love for all things paper and stationeries... I recently fell in love with modern calligraphy!

I have seen it online for quite a while but did not take the plunge and tried my hands at it but I could not resist anymore and so I went to buy a set of calligraphy pen and ink to get started. I love that this is the dip ink set and not the ones with cartridges. It just makes the experience so much more fun and authentic.

Writing calligraphy as a leftie poses quite a number of challenges. Although I overcame smudging a long time ago... and I could write italics pretty alright (my first taste of calligraphy was 18 years ago, believe you me) but modern calligraphy totally threw me off.. haha... to achieve this effect which is so easy for righties, I have to write backwards!!

I will post a short clip of how I wrote backwards in the next post!

Illustrated ABC Print

So, I have been busy lately... doing quite a bit of illustration and watercoloring which has been so therapeutic and wonderful :)

Some of the illustrations, I turned into cards and they are currently available at The Buttercup LA. They will soon be available on my online shop too (which is in the works at the moment).

I had so much fun drawing and painting these animals for the print.... I had to research some of them too as I wanted this whole print to be ALL animals only :)

It will be printed without the watermark, of course, and packed in a cello bag with backing to protect the print. This print is 8.5 x 11 inches and printed on 110 lbs white  acid-free cardstock.

As the shop is still in the works, you can purchase my artwork via email at evelintee@gmail.com
Payments will be made via secure Paypal transactions.

Thanks!

Love. Smitten with you

Lately, as I scroll through my photo album in my iPhone, all I see are photos of my baby boy... I have neglected taking pictures of a lot of little daily stuffs (and my darling cat, Penny) and I probably should remind myself to take more pictures of 'insignificant' daily happenings too, you know.. for Project Life? haha.

Here's another layout I made using photos from Persnickety Prints. I love their 3x4 polaroid prints.

He makes me very exasperated at times but when he smiles, he melts my heart once again. I guess that's a baby's special ability, right?

I handstitched all the stitchings on this layout as my sewing machine is giving me some issues and I am lazy to fix it...

Do link up your Persnickety or fussy cutting projects over at Paper Issues for your chance to win a $25 gift card!

Watercolor fun

I am going to share another layout that I made using the photos that I ordered from Persnickety Prints. Watercolor is a trend that I've been seeing on layouts lately, so I attempted to create a layout with it too.

I used my waterbrush to pick up some watercolor from the palette (I chose pink) and just brushed it on my bazzill cardstock. I used a hairdryer to dry the paper cos I can't wait for it to dry. My scrapping time is very limited now that I have a newborn. The paper curled a little but it's ok. Just try to blow-dry it from both front and back and that should straighten it out a little.

Here's my finished layout.

This is not my usual style but I kinda like that it looks dreamy with the vellum and white on white elements. I was inspired by Wilna Furstenburg while creating this layout :)

Do drop by Paper Issues to join us and link up your projects for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate from Persnickety Prints.

Have fun!

Project Life - Week 10 part 2

As I mentioned in my previous post, I have a lot of photos taken during Week 10 of this year :) Hence, I have 4 pages worth to document instead of the usual 2 (although, I never really cared that it has to be a 2-page spread. It can be 1-page to as many as you like. It's your Project Life)

This was the week we went to Santa Monica Pier and also to the Farmer's Market at The Grove.

The weather was beautiful although the wind can be rather strong and chilly. Looking back at these pictures made me miss my mum again...

On a brighter note, do remember to use my code 'Evelin20' when you check out at Paper Issues' store to get 20% off! I just bought a whole lot :D Will blog about it soon and oh, shipping was super duper fast!

Project Life - Week 10 part 1

It's been a while since I indulged myself in some 'me-time' a.k.a crafting time :) I know I am way behind on Project Life but oh well, I will just complete one week at a time and see how it goes. Some weeks, I actually do have more photos to document and some weeks, less...

I have a lot of photos for Week 10. I guess partly because my mum was here and we were out and about town :)

I have embellished the pages but have yet to journal in them yet. The same is happening to my Week 11... haha. Am scrapbooking some layouts at the moment. Will share some sneaks soon.

In the meantime, do check out Paper Issues' blog. I am posting there today!

And remember to use my code 'Evelin20' if shop over there to get 20% off!!

Non-crafty related post

My mum just boarded the plane to fly back to Malaysia today and I'm feeling rather emo.... She has been so kind to fly over to LA to take care of me after I delivered and well, she has not only taken care of me, but my hubby, my baby and also the cleanliness of my entire little apartment :)

Without her, I would have been more lost than how lost I was already feeling... and I probably would not have clean laundry or hot meals cos hubby always works late... haha...

I miss her so much already...

Thanks Mum for putting up with me when I was so hormonal and taking care of me and my entire little family. You are truly awesome!

Proud Daddy

I managed to squeeze in some time yesterday to make a layout based on Citrus Twist's Sunday Sketch :) And now I am quickly uploading it while the baby naps. He has been wanting to be nursed the whole day and I do mean the whole day!!

I kept my layout pretty simple choosing to let the photo speak for itself :) I will add journalling on the tag that I tugged beneath the photo and the patterned papers.

You can't really see from here but I did pop up the papers with pop-dots to add dimension to the page. That's all for now :) Will be back!

A quick post

Made this layout a couple of nights ago :) I love this picture my mum snapped for us! It's our little family's first photo.

Ever since I delivered my little Ryan, I find that I scrapped a whole lot faster! I think it's due to the fact that I know I can't waste time dilly-dallying anymore. Time is of the essence and it's really precious! And I'm not sure why but I feel the 'need' to scrap. It's probably cos I feel really happy after that! It's probably cos it still makes me feel like 'me' and not just a milk-machine/diaper-changer/craddler... haha.

Ok, off I go to change his diaper and feed him now. Till next time :)

Oh, if you wanna see the photos of my layouts before I post them here, do follow me on Instagram. My user ID is EvelinT. I normally post there first as it's really way faster :P
